We were driving North on Highway 1 (Pacific Coast Highway) and soon we were out of the country and into residential neighborhoods. The houses in San Francisco are very unique, as you may have seen in such TV shows as Full House or in various movies featuring San Francisco. It was about this time that I got my first glimpse of the Golden Gate Bridge, something that I've tried and failed to do since March 2002. I was supposed to go during my spring break of 2002, but wound up in Pasadena instead, but that's a whole 'nother adventure that you can find right here. I got giddy as soon as I saw the tower supports looming over the treetops, and I couldn't wait to be right up close to this modern marvel. |
Trip 2005 - Golden Gate Bridge |
Since it was a Sunday evening, there were little to no tourists to get in our way. We were also able to find ample parking in the vicinity of the Golden Gate Bridge. This was Tim and Jenny's second time here (the first was when they lived in California from July-December of 2001) but Sarah and my first. We were a little more taken aback by the majesty of this creation. |
The San Francisco Bay area is big on ships, and the ships dig it. We saw many a large vessel hauling some crazy imports + exports in & out of the Bay area while we were there. There's a lot of money to be had doing this kind of thing, and once again, I think I'm in the wrong business. |
Now you've got to be saying, "what's the big deal Scott, it's just a freakin' bridge. What's so special about it?" Go there and you'll understand. At least watch a special about it on the History Channel and you'll appreciate it a little more. |
The Golden Gate bridge is the only connection between the city of San Francisco and Marin County, which is important if people want to be able to go between to those places. I'm from Milwaukee, so the only that I cared about was being able to walk across the thing and take pictures. |
