South Carolina 2011 - The Mini-Golf

Hole #2 was a Par 3 but was a lot easier than it looked if you recall high school Geometry or play billiards on a regular basis. The right angle along with the diagonal wall makes it easy for a golfer to sink a hole in one if they just play the bank shot properly. Gary and I took two shots to sink the ball on this one but James and Kevin only took one, which resulted in them winning a prize. And what prize is worthy of this feat? A plastic 5-Points cup complete with lid and straw of course! I didn't play it right and shot a 2, putting me at -2 after two holes with 7 to go.

If I had to choose the athlete between the McKissick boys I would have to choose Gary based solely on the fact that I've seen him run up and down the Afterglow basketball court and crush softballs into the woods in right-center field. I know Kevin from his guitar playing and poetry writing, which are two skills that don't translate well to the field. My hypothesis was proved correct when Gary sank a hole-in-one on hole #1.

Melissa had found this really cool event that would allow us to sample the local flavor and also show off our athletic skills - a bar hopping mini-golf tournament in the 5 Points area of Columbia. This sounded like a perfect way to spend the evening - 9 bars, 9 holes, 9 drinks and 9 mistakes made along the way that would jeopardize our ability to wake up at a timely hour tomorrow morning. I've been down here 2 times prior to this year's trip but I don't remember going to any of these bars. So like Gary and Kevin, all of this will be brand new to us and a great adventure.

Melissa is fiercely competitive and contains a certain drive and fire to succeed, a trait that you would want in an officer of the law and also in a human being. James used to be an avid golfer and has been blessed with natural athletic ability. When you pit these two against each other in a skilled competition and then introduce booze into the mix it is sure to cause a rift that I don't mind sticking around watch as entertainment.

I'm not much of an athlete. I'm not much of anything. But I am pretty good at any game that allows you to play while drinking or with a drink in hand. I excel at things like card games, beer pong, horseshoes, Frisbee, bowling and bean bags to name a few but even though we were drinking today, mini-golf wasn't one of them. On my first show I hit the wall of the middle section and got the ball caught in the archway. I had to kneel down and hit the ball billards-style and ended up settling for a 3 on a par 4, putting me at -1 after one hole. That's not very impressive folks.
