They haven't brewed any delicious PBR here since 1996 when the Pabst Brewery closed down, but many of the original buildings remain. Some have been converted into office space, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Joseph J. Zilber School of Public Health, The Blue Ribbon Lofts and The Best Place at Historic Pabst Brewery, which is where we went on Saturday October 27th. Since the Brewery no longer exists they can't offer a brewery tour, but they do offer a Pabst history tour which was both educational and entertaining. I took my Dad because I knew he'd enjoy the history aspect and was shocked to find out that he never toured the Pabst Brewery when it was in operation. From what I hear it sounded like one hell of a tour with bottomless mugs of PBR at the end. It was a whole lot different that any other brewery tour I've been on but that is what made it unique. It certainly was nice to take a peak into Milwaukee's past to when we were the beer making capital of the world. I wish I could go back in time and visit Schlitz, Blatz and Pabst. But I can't do that until time machines are invented so until then I'll just pay homage to King Gambrinus, the Patron Saint of beer and brewing. The Best Place at Pabst has a statue of him in their courtyard so I dropped to one knee and bowed before my King, much like I do every time I see a plaque or statue dedicated to my lord. |
