It was real nice to see flowers. They are a sign of Spring and that the long cold Winter will soon be behind us. I already got a taste of being outside in during these inside months (when I was in Portland back in February) and by now I was taking full advantage of the mild temperatures. When I think back on these times I ask myself - why do I live in Wisconsin? The answer is simple. Family. My family lives there so I live there too. But when my family is willing to travel, I'm the first one on the plane off to warmer climates. |
I wandered back across the Great Lawn (not the official name) and took a panoramic picture. While I was doing that I caught a glimpse of Mom and Jenny walking towards me. Thanks to the zoom on the camera (you gotta love modern technology! You used to have to walk towards someone. That was your zoom!) I was able to capture Jenny ninja kicking. And that's what happened while I was busy taking pictures of America's largest privately owned house. One tends to miss those kinds of things while engaging in that activity. |
The Carolinas March 2015 - Biltmore Estate |
Jenny Reck has a comparison scale - things are either bigger than or smaller than her head. By that measuring tool, the Biltmore Estate qualifies as being bigger than her head. I tried to take a picture that would properly validate that and this is the best that I could come up with. After that I decided to get in on the fun (from this vantage point, I AM bigger than the Biltmore Estate) and then the whole family decided to join in. I took a picture of them (with me in the creeper bubble) and then we asked a random to take one of all of us. Even though selfies have become the new normal, I'm proud to keep the "ask a random stranger to take your picture" process alive. |
We then walked to to the top of the hill, which was a lot of extra work considering that we've been walking all day through this giant house. I have a step counter on my phone, and this day I walked more than any day on record. Even though I was already feeling the burn, the walk up to the top of the hill was well worth it when I saw the view. This was amazing. Up there was a statue of Diana, the Goddess of the hunt, the moon and childbirth, being associated with wild animals and woodland and having the power to talk to and control animals. Much like we did in New York City when we visited the Statue of Liberty, we tried to look up this lady's skirt. And much like the previous time, we found that these garments were basically cemented to the skin and we would not be seeing any of her naughty parts any time soon. That's too bad because like Lady Liberty, I'm sure those naughty parts would have been legendary. But I'll never know. Both of those ladies don't show off the bits. |
