World Series of Beer Pong 4 - Before |
A few weeks before we came out here, I got a call from a guy named Kevin who is with a production company that was planning on filming a beer pong special during the WSoBP. As you know, Film 101 already made (but has not yet released) a documentary that was filmed during WSoBP II, but I was told this one would be different. This one was going to be styled after the World Series of Poker, which features player profiles, interviews and back stories intercut with game footage. They said that they were going to feature about 10 teams, and asked if we wanted to be one of them. Of course I said yes, because beer pong is a subject that I am very passionate about. Although I am not the most talented player in the sport, I feel like I have some good information to share. We talked with them for well over an hour, and I let Kanz do most of the talking. After all, I've been through this thing before, and didn't need to be in the spotlight any longer. It was time for someone else to shine. I just hope that these guys fulfill their promise and release this damn thing so people can see it, unlike the other guys. |
The tournament was supposed to start at like 8:00 pm. I woke up about 8:15 pm, and shouted out "Oh $#!t" like I was late for a big final exam or something. Normally I would have just said screw it, but I paid $30 for us to play, so we ran on over to Margaritaville. When we got there it already started, and the place was packed. |
We filmed in their room over at the Hilton Suites, and once we got back outside it was dark. We had signed up and paid for a East vs. West coast tournament that was taking place at Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville, but we went back to the room to rest for a bit before that got started. I was already getting partied out. |
There was wall to wall beer pong going on every floor, and even on the outside patio as you saw in the previous picture. It was pretty intense, but Kanz and I were too busy rubbing the sleepiness out of our eyes to appreciate this spectacle. We had passed out in the room while watching TV, and by the grace of Austin and Peter (who were running the tournament) we were allowed to keep our spot and play. We figured that it would be a good warm up, because all of these teams would be playing in the event that starts tomorrow. But for whatever reason, we just couldn't get it going and eventually bowed out of the double elimination tournament with a 1-2 record. Our lone win came by beating a boyfriend/girlfriend team that couldn't hit a piņata with their eyes open. If someone was taking stats, we would have paper evidence that we missed well over a million shots, but they missed a million + 1, so we got a very ugly victory. We were worried that this may be a precursor to tomorrow, but we knew that tomorrow was another day and to take it one game at a time. Despite our play, we were excited and ready. |
We didn't feel like sticking around to watch the tournament unfold, for we were the only Milwaukee team that elected to play in the tournament. Since we were out, and we had no team to back up with our defense, we went back to the hotel and to the restaurant to get some food before bed. I sat at the end of the counter and ate my french fries, while Kanz flirted with some 40 year old ladies. They apparently were in "what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas" mode, but I reminded Kanz that we were here to play beer pong, not to mingle with cougars. We hung out there a little longer than necessary, but we eventually retired back to the room to get some shut eye. Kanz called the front desk to set up a wake up call, just in case we overslept. We didn't need to be late for arguably the biggest tournament of out beer pong careers. |
